Take Charge of Your Wellness

rain and flowerI received an email this morning that is dredging up painful memories of the past. My emotional response has ranged from despair to rage to spite to grief.

And I am grateful for those emotions.

Just because emotions are unpleasant doesn’t make them “bad.” In fact, experiencing the full range of emotions is part of being fully alive.

So I allowed myself to feel them. I punched a pillow and railed. I wept in my husband’s arms.

You cannot fully feel joy if you do not allow yourself to fully feel grief. How can you know love if you have never felt hate?

Many women strive to keep themselves emotionally numb out of fear of feeling “negative” emotions, and in do so you unknowingly keep yourself stuck in the rebound weight-gain cycle.

You may have been taught that your emotions are a liability and not an asset. You might be tempted to think you’re being over-emotional.

You may eat your emotions or stuff them back down. This just creates internal blocks that literally weigh you down.

So I railed, wept, and released.

And I feel cleansed. I feel clarity. And I am more determined than ever.

I can stay stuck in the past, OR I can move forward in alignment with my core values and spiritual beliefs. I can choose a different response.

My focus is my decision.

I could totally use this experience as an excuse to stay in victim energy. My sharing it would generate sympathy, and I’m sure I could get many of your fabulous readers on my side.

But that does not serve me.

No matter how significant the negative event, it is still your choice to focus on it—or not.

This was brought home to me a number of years ago during a conversation with a friend whose husband died unexpectedly while they were getting ready for work. He literally died in her arms.

Not long after, I asked how she was doing. Her response, “I’m having a few bad moments in otherwise good days.”

That struck me not only in the heart, but in the head. If she wasn’t allowing the sudden and traumatic death of her husband to bring her down, than what excuse did I have for responding badly to anything going on in my life?

This is even more powerful when you decide not to judge the painful experiences as “bad.” Pain is an important and valuable part of life. Experiencing it is a part of being fully human.

So today, I have had a few painful moments as part of my glorious day. I decide to fully embrace ALL of my emotions and experiences as valuable in my life. I decide not to use this as an excuse to wallow in self-pity, but to use this as a reason to continue the charge to fully be the best possible version of me.

I totally and completely love and accept myself and all the emotions that I feel. I embrace the valuable emotional guidance I am receiving.

Being at your optimal weight and experiencing wellness and well-being doesn’t mean that you will never experience challenges. It means that you are empowered in how you respond to those challenges. It means is that you see those situations differently and choose your responses rather than just reacting.

And that makes all the difference in the world.

What can you do to begin to acknowledge your feelings, rather than stuffing them back down?

When you stop fighting experiences and judging them as “bad,” and instead open your eyes and hearts to the gifts that are in every moment, you finally begin to receive those gifts.

As Jerry Hicks used to say, “Everything is always working out for me.” No matter what, no matter who, no matter where, Source (God, the Universe, All That Is, Higher coach—whatever works for you) is always on our side providing the experiences that are unfolding perfectly for my—and your—growth.

No matter what you are facing today, it is up to you to take this moment and consciously choose your focus and decide how you want to feel. You can endure it, let it crush you, or decide to thrive.

The experience will not change, but you change your experience of it.

Today, I decide to thrive.

What is your decision?

Together we can do it!

Being Perfectly You is Key to Getting the Body You Want

Self Love

“I have to have a perfect body, or I won’t be beautiful.”

“I have to diet and exercise perfectly, or I’ve blown it.”

“I have to be perfect, or people won’t love me or I won’t’ be a success.”

Feeling like you have to be and do things perfectly or you are a “failure” is a common attribute of the women with whom I work.

Perfection is an expectation that can never be met. The stress of trying to fulfill this unmeetable expectation can be a serious blow to your wellness—and weight loss efforts.

If you think about it, life would actually get pretty boring if you were perfect.

You would never learn anything, get to challenge yourself or grow. It would be as if everything in the world were yellow. And while you may love yellow, you appreciate it so much more if there’s a little blue, pink, or green thrown in for some contrast.

Your body is your body. Its curves and shape are uniquely you. Its size and contours are different from everyone else on the planet. It is that uniqueness that makes you beautiful, not your conformity.

What is optimal for your body will be different from everyone else. While using another’s body to inspire you to meet your goals can be a useful tool, if you are comparing your body and finding fault or reason to criticize yourself, you are actually doing harm to you, your body, and are unknowingly sabotaging your weight-loss goals.

Seeing where you aren’t perfect is an opportunity.

Engaging in the process of figuring out what you do want, what you are doing right, determining what is optimal for you, and valuing how you are unique will help you harness the powers of the Universe to work for you, rather than keep you stuck in the rebound weight-gain cycle.

This is how you begin to sculpt and create the body—and life—you want. You reach for the body and life that is uniquely you.

This is where the fun is! This is having a life that is vibrant and fulfilling.

Let go of the need to be perfect. Let go of feeling like you should already be at your goal. Just jump in exactly where you are.

What is optimal for you? Who are you when you are at your optimal weight and are experiencing optimal wellness? How will that help you be more uniquely you?

Move towards that. Engage in that. Have fun doing that.

This is life! This is thriving! This is creating the body—and life—you really want.

Together we can do it!

How to Use Respect to Get the Body You Want

Photo and QuoteA former boss of mine had a sign on his door that read, “The floggings will continue until morale improves.”

It was a joke, of course. But how often do we try to motivate ourselves with the whip of internal insults, slurs, and condemnations?

Does telling yourself that you’re “ugly, fat, stupid, and lazy,” really make you want to get up and do your workout, or forgo the potato chips?

This may be tough to hear, but if spoken aloud, your internal dialogue might be deemed verbal abuse.

Sometimes this abuse can go on practically nonstop, every day. What do you think this does to your self-esteem and belief that you can achieve your wellness goals?

Pushing through this line of thinking to create action takes incredible energy and strength, much like rolling a boulder up a hill. And while progress can be made, without changing your underlying thoughts, emotions, and beliefs, one moment of mental fatigue or flagging self-discipline may result in your watching that boulder roll right back down.

The result is you not only regain all the weight you lost, but then some.

Changing your thoughts, emotions, and beliefs about yourself, what you want, and your ability to achieve it helps break this cycle of self-punishment. It creates a boost of momentum that makes your push towards wellness a lot more fun and sustainable.

A general rule of thumb is, “If you wouldn’t say it to a friend, it’s not appropriate to say to yourself.”

Begin treating yourself with the respect you deserve.

  • Focus on all the reasons you do want to move your body and eat healthy foods.
  • Focus on all the things you are doing to move yourself forward.
  • Speak to yourself with kindness and encouragement, and celebrate each small sign of progress.

By doing the internal work along with the external work, you can achieve the body you want.

Together we can do it!

  • Are you ready to break the rebound weight-gain cycle once and for all?

Test if Your New Year’s Resolution to Lose Weight is Heading for Success or Failure

Success

Have you made a list of things you want to achieve in 2013? Chances are you made a resolution or two.

One of them was probably to lose weight.

Today, you may be fired up to get to the gym or to start that new diet. If so, Woo Hoo! Deciding to change is a huge step. Let’s harness that positive energy you are feeling right now and keep it going!

And if you are dreading being hungry and feeling deprived, and hate the idea of working out, that’s OK. You are where you are. Let’s begin to shift your energy to make your goal more appealing, and thus achievable.

No matter where you are, look at your thoughts, feelings, and beliefs and see if they are supporting your new actions, or if they are setting you up to fail.

For instance, how sustainable will your commitment to workout be if you are thinking thoughts like:

  • “I hate exercise.”
  • “I hate to sweat.
  • “I have to work out perfectly everyday or there’s no sense in doing it.”
  • “Exercise is no fun.”
  • “I am hating every moment of this.

Those kinds of thoughts will ensure you give up on your resolution.

You can tell by how they make you feel. How much do they fuel your belief that you can meet your goal? What outcome are they pointing towards?

Chances are if you’re thinking thoughts like these, you can’t jump right away to the idea that, “exercise is fun and you love it.” How honest does that feel? So begin by easing up on your thoughts just a little bit.

For instance:

  • “This may be hard, but I really want to meet my goal.”
  • “I know when I get this done I’m going to feel better.”
  • “I can do anything for 10 minutes.”
  • “I don’t have to be perfect, but I do need to be consistent.”
  • “I used to love running and playing as a kid. If I don’t love this exercise, I’ll find something else I enjoy.”
  • “Each small step I’m taking is moving me closer to my goal.”
  • “I’m building endurance and muscle. Tomorrow or next week this will be easier.”
  • “I want to do this because I want to be healthy, fit, and slim.”
  • “I want the freedom that health brings. I want to love my body—and life.”

Easing up a little on your thoughts feels better and fuels your positive beliefs that you can achieve your goals.

Aligning your thoughts, feelings, and beliefs to support your actions is like turbocharging your ability to meet your weight loss goal.

Pay attention to your thoughts, feelings, and beliefs about your diet and exercise program. Are they moving you where you want to go? If they aren’t, change them to support your goals—and help ensure your resolution becomes reality!

Together we can do it!

The Wait is Over to Get the Body You Want!

I was standing on the red rocks in Sedona, Arizona, last week feeling fully engaged in my life.

There was no more “waiting” to turn my dreams into a reality. I was taking bold, concrete steps to serve the women whose pain I understand—and have personally overcome.

If you are like many of the women I work with, there’s some part of your life that you are putting off “until you lose weight.” Maybe it’s taking that trip to the beach, or really going after a promotion, or even taking a dance class.

Chances are, there is something that you would do “if only” you were thinner.

The reality is that waiting to fully live your life is actually one of the things keeping you stuck in the rebound cycle of regaining the same 30 pounds over and over again.

It’s time to let go of the wait, so you can let go of the weight.

I know it’s scary.

There’s a part of you that believes you can’t do it, that people will laugh, that you are less than you really are.

It’s not true.

And it’s time to fully live your life to get the body you want.

Here are some tips to get started:

  • Think about all the reasons Why you want to do that thing you have been putting off. That can range from it just being fun, to helping you meet people and establish relationships, to helping you fulfill your life’s purpose.
  • Think about how doing that thing will make you feel. Will it feel exhilarating? Exciting? Satisfying? Make a list and practice feeling that way right now.
  • Think about one small thing that you could do today or this week that would make you feel like you were moving forward. Maybe it’s looking up trip information online, opening the conversation with your boss about the promotion, or scheduling the dates of the dance class in your calendar. Then think about the next small step you can take.

Stop waiting to live your life until “you lose weight.” Focus on what you want, feel that surge of positive energy, and begin creating the life you want today.

Together we can do it!

Ready to stop the rebound weight cycle once and for all? While in Sedona last week, I put the finishing touches on a new coaching program starting January 7 that will help you finally get the body you really want.

What Body are You Planning?

While I’m in Sedona, Arizona, attending a business mastermind retreat, I’m sharing one of my favorite past blogs.

Whatever you’re thinking about is literally like planning a future event. When you’re worrying, you are planning. When you’re appreciating you are planning. What are you planning?

Abraham-Hicks

I used to be a worrier.

It’s not clear how I came to the conclusion that to ward off catastrophe, I needed to hold the problem close in my mind, but that’s what I truly believed. My thoughts were an endless stream of judgment and fear. I practiced worry so much that I was really good at it.

It’s exhausting just to recall it.

Moving beyond that was a process of desire and persistence. I knew that life was supposed to feel better than it was—had to feel better than that awful place—and I wanted to find the way.

That desire led me on a quest to find out how. Each book that I read and teacher that I found led me closer and closer to understanding the answer.

When I “got” that my worry was literally planning a future event and bringing me more things to worry about, I felt panic. I was so good at worry that those thoughts came easily. I didn’t want more of that! The idea that I held the responsibility for my own life and happiness was so overwhelming that I literally had to disregard it.

But you can’t unknow something completely.

Slowly and surely I began shifting my thoughts towards what I wanted, and letting go of control. It took time, persistence, and energy, just like exercising your body takes time, persistence, and energy. It is a process.

Now I am in a much better place where I love and appreciate life and I feel good much of the time. But I know that I’m far from—and will never get to—having it all figured out, and can clap my hands together and proclaim myself, “Done.”

I know this because I have been seeking long enough to watch my mentors and their teachings grow and evolve. I know this because our spirits are eternal, which means an endless opportunity to expand and grow.

No matter where you are, your understanding, love, and joy always has the potential to grow.

Which means just relax. Don’t stress about it—anything really. Slow and steady is all you need to move yourself forward.

  • Practice focusing more on what you want
  • Forgive yourself when you focus on what you don’t want.
  • Strive to appreciate life moment-to-moment.

Do that, and you will be creating the body–and life–of your dreams.

Together we can do it!

Healthy Communication From the Inside Out

While I’m in Sedona, Arizona, attending a business mastermind retreat, I’ve asked a few fabulous bloggers to step in. Today’s guest blog is by Renée Vos de Wael.

Communication is something we do all day.

It starts in the morning when you wake up and goes on until you have brushed your teeth and switched off the light to enjoy a blissful nights rest.

It is interesting to watch how you communicate throughout the whole day—with yourself and others.

Have you ever taken the time to be your own observer? To do so in an unbiased way is challenging to say the least. I know.

I gave myself the task to pay close attention to the words I use during the day—and was surprised by the results. It took me a couple of tries not to judge myself.

It started out with simple things. For example, I walked out the door and was almost to the car when I realized that I had forgotten my phone. I had to go back inside to get it and while walking back I noticed the conversation I was having with myself.

“Why are you always forgetting something? You must be a real idiot to forget such simple things.”

All this negative self-talk going on inside my head just because I forgot my phone. “Really?” I had to stop and ask, “Is it necessary to be so harsh with myself?”

Another moment of self-observation was while doing homework with the kids.

Coordinating homework for three kids is not my strong suit. As a kid, I always found doing my own homework hard because I never understood the purpose of it! So I find it a challenge to get my children motivated.

After a snack and something to drink . . . homework!

The requirement that homework has to be completed the next day makes it a lot easier. (It’s always better to finish everything and not leave things to the last moment!)

But after a while, I start to get annoyed. They are tired and want to play, and I end up forcing them to finish their homework by any means possible. Then the internal dialogue starts and I’m questioning my abilities as a mum.

“Am I too hard on them? The things I say are not always the nicest, which comes from forcing something on them.”

“Am I a good mum for putting them in this school? This is our life at the moment and there isn’t much choice of schooling.”

While I’m having this conversation in my head, as soon as the kids are finished with their work, they’re off and playing. They’re all smiles and we’re laughing together again and all seems forgotten.

I needed to start using different words with myself so I didn’t feel so beaten and bruised.

And I know I’m not the only one who has experienced this type of negative self-talk.

This is something that you are doing to you. No one else is judging you this way, so why are you judging yourself so harshly?

And more importantly, how do you change your internal communication?

As the Nike commercial says, “Just do it!”

Here’s an exercise to get you started:

Notice every time something nasty or self-destructive turns up in your thoughts about yourself, and replace it with a positive thought. It can be a word or phrase you come up with, or it can be something from a book.

Notice that the more you practice this exercise, the better you are at getting your emotions under control and not being so critical of yourself.

I can tell you from experience that it is not easy, but it is doable.

It not only helps you feel better about yourself, but it impacts those around you in a positive way. And if you stumble and fall, get up and start again!

Your Weight Loss Success Is Reflected In How You Dress

Next week I’m heading to Sedona, Arizona, where I will be experiencing my first professional photo shoot with the amazing Lindsay Miller.

I’m super excited—and a little nervous.

And I’ve been thinking a lot about appearance.

One of the quickest ways to achieve our goals is to imagine how the person with that success would think, feel, and act—and then to think, feel, and act that way right now.

This makes sense when you think about the Foundation Principle that “Energy Attracts Like Energy,” also known as the Law of Attraction.

This means you get what you project. If you are thinking negative thoughts about yourself, you will get more opportunities to think negative thoughts. If you are feeling bad about yourself, you will get more opportunities to feel bad.

Even what you are wearing impacts what you project.

Many of the women that I work with unknowingly perpetuate the cycle of losing and regaining the same 30 pounds by wearing sloppy clothes, or clothes that are too small and don’t fit well because they don’t want to “give in” to their weight gain.

But this actually perpetuates the weight rebound cycle because it impacts how they think and feel about themselves.

This is true no matter what your goal. In my case, if I want to be a successful author and entrepreneur, I need to cultivate the thoughts, feelings, and actions that go with that. This includes looking like a successful author and entrepreneur.

So I’m about to head out the door to go find an outfit for the photo shoot that not only makes me feel fabulous while wearing it, but projects the success and goals I want to achieve.

How you dress impacts how you feel about yourself. Look right now at what you are wearing. Is it the old you or who you want to be?

Feeling good about yourself boosts your energy and desire to make consistent decisions that move you towards your wellness goals. And the more energy you put towards what you want, the more of that energy you will attract. So the snowball effect begins to work in you favor.

What do you want more of? Who do you want to be? Does what you are thinking, feeling, doing, and even wearing project that?

This doesn’t mean you have to transform your thoughts and feelings—or wardrobe—overnight.

All you have to do is slowly and steadily focus more on Who you want to be—and begin making the decisions and choices that person would make.

An easy place to start is with what you are wearing.

  • Does it fit well?
  • Is it in good repair?
  • How do you feel when you are wearing it?

Consciously decide to get more of Who and what you are projecting.

Together we can do it!

  • Are you struggling with your weight?
  • Are you worried about holiday weight gain?
  • Are you ready to get the body you really want?

You are Worth Celebrating

On this day of your life, I believe God wants you to know…

…that false modesty will get you nowhere — nor will

genuine modesty when it is not required.

Modesty is rarely required by Life, did you know that?

It’s true. People are more self-deprecating than they

ever need to be. God says it’s okay to celebrate

your self. Honor the self, and delight in expressing

your talents and your gifts.

It is through the happy sharing of your treasures that

you show other people that they are treasured.

Always, always remember that.

Neale Donald Walsch

I heard from a fabulous woman yesterday who was so proud of herself for choosing not to eat any Halloween candy.

But as we were celebrating her success, every other sentence downplayed her achievement.

She said things like:

  • “I know it’s silly, but . . .”
  • “It’s not that big a deal . . .”
  • “Maybe I don’t have a big sweet tooth . . .”
  • “It’s stupid to make such a big deal out of this . . .”

I hear these kind of self-deprecating statements a lot. They are not necessary—nor are they helping you get the body you want.

The more clearly you can visualize and celebrate yourself at your best the more you actually show up as that person.

This is true even if you did eat some candy or other Halloween treats.

Another woman I was talking to allowed herself to have two, small homemade chocolate chip cookies in a day of otherwise impeccable eating.

While she wasn’t beating herself up about them (Progress!), she also wasn’t celebrating:

  • The good food she did eat all day.
  • Her moderation and restraint.
  • How much better for her the cookies made with love and fresh ingredients were than highly processed candy.
  • How delicious the cookies were and how she focused on eating them and enjoyed every single morsel with gratitude.

Taking a more positive view and focusing on what you are doing “right” generates momentum towards achieving your goals.

The first step towards shifting your focus to build momentum to achieving the body—and life—that you want, is to ask yourself:

  • How often do you give yourself a mental high-five?
  • How often do you feel the need to downplay your success?
  • How willing are you to be silly and playful as you celebrate yourself?

Then take some time to focus on you. Appreciate your unique personality, skills, and talents. Catalog what you are doing to help you meet your goals.

And let go of the rest.

What are the things that you appreciate most about you? Go ahead and look. You are worth celebrating.

Together we can do it!
