Love Your Way Slim

“Love yourself first and everything else falls into line. You really have to love yourself to get anything done in this world.”

-Lucille Ball

Often, women who struggle to release weight are love-starved.

Oh, you may have plenty of people who love and adore you, but you don’t feel loved.

Perhaps you’re so afraid of being judged that you refuse to completely open your heart to others. Or you have expectations of how people should love you that aren’t being met. Or you’re so self-critical, that you believe yourself to be unlovable.

Overeating is often an attempt to find the love you crave and fill the void in your heart with food. It is another way of looking in the wrong place to feel comforted and loved.

At the root of this is the mistaken belief that love is something that is given to you, or that you have to earn or be worthy of. That love comes from outside of you. That expressions of love have to meet certain criteria before you will accept them as love.

What many women don’t understand is that they are intrinsically valuable and worthy of love. That love is the very core of Who they are.

Remember the infant you in your mother’s arms. What did you have to do to earn love? What conditions did you put on the love you were receiving? What did you have to change about yourself to be worthy of love?

Regardless of what you have said and done in this life, what you have experienced, or how you have been treated, you are just as loved, lovable, and loving as the infant you.

Allowing yourself to feel loved is key to getting the body–and life–you want.

To see lasting changes in your body, it’s important to begin to crack that shell of protection you have created and allow love to trickle in from alternative places—from All-That-Is (God, the Universe, Source Energy, Higher Coach—whatever works for you) and from yourself.

Here are a couple of proven ways to begin to feel the love.

A powerful way to feel the love is to begin appreciating yourself. Not only can you turn your attention to those physical parts of you that you can appreciate, but also the internal parts. Begin to appreciate Who you are. Are you generous? Funny? Dedicated? Focused? Pay attention to and compliment yourself on your good qualities.

You can also appreciate the things that you do. Is the garden you have been tending overflowing with beautiful flowers? Did your kindness or compliment make someone smile? Did you get in your workout or stick to your eating plan? Count all the things you can appreciate about yourself—inside and out—and acknowledge and celebrate those things.

As you appreciate yourself, you begin to grow the love you have for yourself. You also grow the love you have to give to others.

Truly, loving yourself enough to take care of you—body, mind, and spirit—is what gives you the physical and spiritual capital to spend on others.

“Life is here for you to live to the fullest. Take your courage in your hands and move out into Life. Ask for what you want. Believe that you deserve it, and then allow Life to give it to you.”

Louise Hay

The Options are Overwhelming!

The feeling of being overwhelmed is negative, catabolic energy. For me, it’s victim energy.

It’s the feeling that things are spinning out of control and I can’t do enough fast enough to meet all my goals or other people’s expectations. It is being at the effect of things instead of recognizing that I have complete control of my life and how I respond to each situation, and that I have the support of All-That-Is (God, the Universe, Source Energy, Higher Coach—whatever works for you) in everything I do.

There can be a lot of self-judgment in it, and may include looking at myself through other people’s eyes and seeing all the things I “should” be doing from anyone’s perspective but my own.

Feeling overwhelmed may be different for you—how we interpret emotions is as unique as we are—but my guess is that no matter how it feels to you, it’s not very pleasant.

We can feel overwhelmed when we’re trying to process new information, make a decision, meet a deadline, etc., etc. Trying to force action while we’re feeling this catabolic emotion often doesn’t result in a satisfactory conclusion or outcome because you just can’t see where you’re going very clearly.

One of the best things to do when you catch yourself feeling overwhelmed is often the last thing you feel like you can do—STOP what you are doing.

Taking 15 minutes to breathe deeply, meditate, pray, go for a walk, think about the beach—whatever it is that brings you a sense of relief and helps you calm your mind—will more than pay for itself in productivity later.

Another way to step off that crazy train is to let go of judging your feeling as either good or bad. It is just where you are on your journey, and every experience along the way gives us valuable information about Who we are and Who we want to become.

Once you have regained some mental and emotional clarity, you can then more confidently choose the direction you want to go.

What can you do differently the next time you feel overwhelmed that will help you gain some clarity on where you want to go? What difference does that make to your overall productivity, and to the results you’re achieving?

What Did You Expect?

Whatever you’re thinking about is literally like planning a future event. When you’re worrying, you are planning. When you’re appreciating you are planning…What are you planning?

Abraham as interpreted by Esther Hicks

“Miracles are happening, seen and unseen.”

This is the mantra that has been going through my head all weekend. And I absolutely believe it to the tips of my toes.

Every time I was critical of my body or discouraged that my physical progress in my 18-week Transformation Challenge isn’t further along, I said it.

Every time I thought about the future and doubted, I said it.

Every time I caught myself concerned or worried, I said it.

Because this is my life I’m creating. If I want things to be different, then my thoughts, feelings, and beliefs have to be different first.

When you think about the Foundation Principle that “Like Energy Attracts Like Energy,” also known as the Law of Attraction, it makes sense that if you’re doubting, worrying, or being critical of yourself or others you’re attracting more of that same energy back to you. In other words, you’re creating more things about which to doubt, worry, or be critical.

A quick way to check what you’re thinking, and therefore creating, is to examine what you expect. Do you expect things to work out—or not? Do you expect life to go your way—or not? Do you expect things to be easy—or not? You’re getting more of what you expect.

All-That-Is (God, the Universe, Source Energy, Higher Coach—whatever works for you) absolutely wants you to have every good thing you desire, but you have to open the vibrational-door wide enough to receive it.

You’re opening that door when you’re experiencing positive anabolic emotions, such as hope, contentment, eagerness, excitement, joy, and love.

Even more powerful than shifting those negative catabolic thoughts and emotions is to build on the anabolic, because that’s what you truly want more of.

So every time this weekend that I caught myself feeling confident, I reminded myself that “Miracles are happening, seen and unseen.”

Every time I was appreciating something, I said it.

Every time I was laughing, I said it.

Every time I felt loved or loving, I said it.

Perhaps you don’t believe in miracles. Do you believe in answers and solutions? Then replace miracles with a word that does bring a feeling of relief, because that’s all that’s needed to shift to a more anabolic state. Every time you make even a tiny shift towards being more anabolic, you open the door a little wider for the Universe to give you the answers, solutions—and even miracles—that you’re asking for.

What can you do to remind yourself that answers, solutions, and miracles are coming? More importantly, what can you do to believe it?

You’ll See It When You Believe It

What if the thing holding you back from experiencing optimal wellness and well-being is your belief that you don’t have it?

“Wait a minute,” you might say. “I don’t have those things. How can I believe anything other than the fact that I don’t have optimal wellness or well-being?”

And there is the problem.

Most people approach life with the expectation that they will “believe it when they see it.” They want hard facts, statistics, and reality to back them up. “Show me the money,” they say.

But this defies every spiritual guidance and practice. What is faith other than believing that all things are possible? That when you ask, it is given, and that it is up to you to “believe it and you will see it?”

Often people pray by continually asking for the same thing over and over again. By asking more than once, you are essentially telling All-That-Is (God, the Universe, Source Energy, Higher Coach—whatever works for you) that not only don’t you have the thing you want, but that you don’t believe or have faith that what you are asking for is coming.

The first step to creating optimal wellness and well-being is then to first believe that it is even possible.

This is why it is called a leap of faith. You have to disregard the evidence around you and trust that the wellness and well-being you have asked for is yours. That the process for its arrival is underway—much as you trust that UPS is bringing you the shirt you ordered regardless of the fact that you didn’t watch the shirt being packaged, loaded up on the truck, and going from point to point until it is delivered to you.

And it’s usually not that direct. Achieving optimal wellness and well-being is a process that is measured by continual growth and progress. It is something you are always in the state of achieving, so it’s even more important to focus on the evidence that supports your belief rather than the evidence that does not.

What does optimal wellness and well-being mean to you? How much do you believe that it is possible to achieve? What can you do to begin to embrace the possibility?

Don’t You Love That?

As they get older, people tend to find a routine that is comfortable. They’ve identified what they like and what they don’t, and primarily stick with the ideas, beliefs, people, and experiences they know and enjoy. They begin to draw a boundary around themselves and automatically reject anything new.

This is when it’s easy to get caught up in living a comfortable life and forget Who you really are. You can begin living life on autopilot.

But the whole point of life is to expand and grow. It’s setting your sights on something new and using the power of your desire to literally pull Source Energy to and through you to create a brand new thought, perspective, or experience that is unique to you. And as you get your bearings in this new place, you can then look around for something new to ignite a desire within you.

That feeling of exhilaration is literally life-force! It’s the constructive anabolic-energy that helps our bodies heal, rebuild, and flow with physical energy.

This doesn’t mean that you need to go jump out of an airplane or do something extreme, unless that is what you want to do. It’s just as effective—and for most people, actually more so—to just reach for something new that feels good.

While it can feel exhilarating to jump for something that scares you silly, there is still forward momentum in continually reaching for what you enjoy. The key is just to reach.

Be Curious

“I have no special talent. I am only passionately curious.”

Albert Einstein

One way to reach is to be genuinely curious about life. My Step-Dad is one of the most curious people I know, and can sometimes drive me crazy asking questions that I have no answers to, but I also love how energetic, creative, and mentally agile he is. Well into his 70s, he’s also incredibly healthy, and doesn’t take a single prescription drug.

Being curious opens you up to ideas, thoughts, and creativity. It is a continual voyage of discovery about life, how things work, and how they can be improved. It can also help you find new things that you love.

Practice Appreciation

Actively appreciating what you do have actually opens you up to discovering new things to appreciate.

There are lots of ways to practice appreciation—write down lists of things you appreciate every day, or as you’re going to sleep, mentally visualize all the events of your day that you appreciate. It’s incredibly powerful to focus on what you appreciate before you even get out of bed in the morning.

Focus on What You Love

We’ve all heard the guidance, “Follow your bliss.” Focusing on and doing things that you love helps open you up to new things.

For me, this was exemplified recently on Pinterest, a virtual pinboard where you can find, organize, and share things that you love. I discovered that I love cars—or more precisely, beautiful pictures of beautiful cars.

As someone who can barely tell a Honda from a Toyota, I was startled to discover my heart a-flutter at just the sheer beauty of a Mercedes Silver Arrow. So I created a board called, “Who Knew I Liked Cars?”

I don’t anticipate that my identification of cars on the road will change, but it was fun to discover that I appreciate something I’ve dismissed my whole life. I already know it will give my Step-Father and me something new to appreciate together.

Zip lining for the first time in Jamaica.

Other ways to reach are to visit new places, try new experiences (I recently tried Zip Lining and loved it!), or talk to new people, even if it’s just standing in the checkout line in the grocery store.

I would love to hear some of the ways that you reach and seek out new things, people, and experiences to enjoy. How does this enhance your life and help you be the best possible version of you?
