Feel Skinny in 2013!

Smiling WomanI have a friend who jokes that when she catches sight of her rear-end in the bathroom mirror that she reminds herself that she has great hair.

While this got a laugh during a group lunch, she’s actually onto something.

When you consider the foundation principle that “Energy Attracts Like Energy,” also known as the Law of Attraction, it becomes clear that focusing on the problem just creates more of the problem.

A subtle mental shift towards something you appreciate is a powerful way to shift the negative catabolic energy generated by looking in the mirror and feeling miserable about what you see.

You will know that you’ve successfully made the shift to a more positive anabolic place when you experience a feeling of genuine appreciation for another part of your body.

A woman I worked with used this technique during her journey to lose 40 pounds. Whenever she caught sight of her stomach, which she judged fat and unattractive, she would quickly shift her focus to appreciating her lean and muscular legs.

I used a similar technique on my own weight-loss journey. Whenever I was conscious of my body, I would turn the song “I Feel Pretty” from the Broadway play, West Side Story, into “I Feel Skinny,” and would play it loudly in my head, letting myself truly feel it.

When you look in the mirror, do you love or hate what you see? What can you do to focus more on what you appreciate?

Imagine the impact that positive anabolic energy is having on your body and overall wellness.

Turn Your New Year’s Resolution to Lose Weight into Reality!

Confetti

Chances are, losing weight is on your list of New Year’s Resolutions—again!

One of the reasons that New Year’s resolutions are often dead by February 1 is that unknowingly, people are focused on what they don’t want.

For instance, you may be focused on being too fat, or that you aren’t thin enough, fit enough, or healthy enough.

And even though you set the resolution to lose weight, get fit, and healthy, the majority of your thoughts and energy are still focused on the fact that you lack what your resolution is focused on.

When you think about the foundation principle that Energy Attracts Like Energy (also known at the Law of Attraction), you can begin to see that thoughts are our mental capital to invest wherever we want, with the dividends being our future life-experiences.

For instance, when you invest the majority of your mental capital on the fact that you don’t have the body you want, you are actually building the account that creates more life experiences where you are unhappy with your body.

If you invest that mental capital in the belief that your body is already wonderful and is getting better and better, your account includes an increase in life experiences of an ever improving body.

The challenge is, it’s often difficult to recognize where you are investing your thoughts.

It seems like if you are focused on how much you want to be slim you should get the body you want.

No wonder it is incredibly frustrating and discouraging to think you are getting the body you want only to continue to struggle with your weight.

But your life experiences—and body—are always letting you know where you are investing most of your mental capital.

A good way to tell where you are investing your thoughts and energy is by paying attention to how you feel. Focusing on lack feels like yearning or even desperation.

This is why wanting often gets a bad rap; people confuse wanting with yearning. A feeling of lack alwaysfeels bad.

Wanting is a feeling of confidence that you will get the thing you desire. It’s knowing the goal you have set is yours. It’s enjoying the thought of what you want and being thrilled as you watch the process of life shifting to help you achieve your goal. It’s feeling engaged and excited to do the things you can do to bring your request to fruition and letting go of what you can’t control with an absolute knowing that the Universe (God, Source Energy, All-That-Is, Higher Coach—whatever works for you.) is happily engaging all of its incredible resources on your behalf.

But it can be hard to shift your focus from yearning for something to thriving in the process of life that will bring you to your goal.

Often it is easier to move yourself forward by shifting your mental capital from losing weight (or whatever your goal is) and to instead investing it in more general life accounts, such as feeling good most of the time, loving and laughing more easily, and enjoying your life more.

You are still investing your mental capital towards achieving your New Year’s Resolution, but there is less risk that the investments aren’t going into the account you truly intend. You can tell if you are investing more wisely because you feel good.

The bottom line is, Yes! Make the New Year’s resolutions, but pay attention to how you feel, and think about diversifying you mental and energetic investments so that you get a better return.

You can tell you are putting your mental capital where you want because you get the immediate bonus of feeling good right now.

Feel Holiday Abundance to Get the Body You Want

GiftsYou are incredibly abundant.

Even if you are lonely, have little or no money, are struggling with your body—you are abundant.

You have an abundance of air to breathe, the abundance of love in your heart, the abundance of being alive in this moment.

While money and gifts are certainly a part of abundance and should be appreciated, there is so much more of life with which to fill our trays. It’s all there waiting for us to look for and allow ourselves to see and receive.

Perhaps you have an abundance of family and friends, or an abundance of time in which to reflect, or an abundance of beauty to admire. You may have an abundance of laughter and excitement, or an abundance of peace and quiet. You may have an abundance of parties and commitments, or an abundance of freedom to live and do as you wish.

These are things that do not cost money and that nobody else can give you. They are there waiting for you to acknowledge—and thus receive.

No matter where you are or what’s going on in your life today, look for and acknowledge your abundance.

Feeling abundant is truly part of the magic of the holidays.

When you feel abundant, the more abundance you are allowing into your life. It is the Law of Attraction in action. This is the foundation principle that “Energy Attracts Like Energy.”

So when you acknowledge your abundance, focus on it, and feel it, the more abundance you are able to see and appreciate. The more abundant you feel.

And a significant bonus from feeling abundant is it’s good for your body!

Feeling abundant creates positive anabolic energy that releases endorphins, testosterone, and body supporting hormones that help your body heal, rebuild, and flow with physical energy.

And yes, makes it easier to release excess weight.

Feeling abundant is literally good for you!

What abundance can you find in your life right now? No matter what it is, acknowledge it and let your heart overflow with appreciation. Then consciously tap into the feeling of abundance all year long.

Notice how feeling abundant makes it easier to get the body you want.

Together we can do it!

Flip the Mental Switch to Get the Body You Want

lightbulbDo you focus more on what you like about your body, or what you don’t? What feels good about your body, or what doesn’t? What you want your body to look like, or all that’s wrong with it right now?

If you are like most people, you put the majority of your attention on what you don’t want.

This is being problem focused and it just gets you more of the problem.

While it is important to have a clear understanding of the problem, you then need to shift your attention to the solution—to what you do want.

You want to become solution focused.

Einstein Intuition and SolutionBeing solution focused is looking at the body you will have rather than what is, or was. It’s thinking about why you want a healthy body. It’s putting your attention on what’s working, what feels good, and all the reasons you can get the body you want, instead of all the reasons you can’t.

The reason for this lies in the underlying energy. Focusing on the problem creates negative catabolic energy, while focusing on the solution generates positive anabolic energy.

Just think about the feelings you have when you are standing in front of the mirror looking at what you don’t like about your body.

You may feel:

  • Disappointed in yourself.
  • Betrayed by your body.
  • Shame that you and your body aren’t perfect.

Those negative feelings generate catabolic energy that impacts your body down to the cellular level—actually making it easier to gain and harder to release weight. Feelings such as fear, distress, and anger are all catabolic.

When you’re in a catabolic emotional state, harmful chemicals and hormones and other physical reactions actually impacts your mind’s ability to think creatively, generate ideas, or even recognize solutions.

You literally need to release the problem and shift your focus to the solution, like flipping a switch from off to on.

The problem, however, is often so compelling and distressing, that you’re stuck thinking about how much you hate your body. It’s almost as if you’re afraid to take your eyes off of how bad your body is because it might get worse when you aren’t looking.

If you think about it in the context of the principle “Energy Attracts Like Energy” (also known as the Law of Attraction), you can see that focusing exclusively on what you hate about your body generates more things about your body to hate.

When you ignore catabolic emotions over a long time, your body begins to register the destructive internal processes as illness. Headaches, back pains, and other physical problems often begin to appear. We may associate these with stress, which is basically just an umbrella-term for all the catabolic physical processes generated by a variety of negative thoughts and emotions. When these thoughts and emotions continue to be left unchecked, those catabolic physical reactions can escalate to bigger problems, such as heart attacks.

Of course things like diet and exercise play a role, but there is scientific research that associates almost all aspects of wellness to stress.

And catabolic energy impacts your minds ability to literally see obvious wellness solutions.

By shifting your focus to the body you do want and why you want it, you then begin to allow yourself to see the path to getting it.

Now imagine standing in front of the mirror focusing on a part of your body you do like. Let’s say you’re appreciating your beautiful hair, the curve of your lips, your elegant nails, your shapely calves, or the new muscles developing in your thighs.

Think about the feelings you are having.

You may feel:

  • Confident
  • Attractive
  • Strong
  • Powerful
  • Sexy

Those positive feelings generate anabolic energy that helps your body rebuild and regenerate—and yes, makes it easier to release weight.

Begin to pay attention to where you focus more on the problem than the solution, and try to shift your perspective.

When you shift to more positive thinking, the solutions began to appear. A friend asks you to be an accountability partner, or you have the opportunity to ensure some healthy foods are on the menu, or you recognize that 10 minutes is long enough to jump on the treadmill or go for a walk around the block.

When you release catabolic energy and shift to a more anabolic state, you truly allow All-That-Is (God, the Universe, Source, Higher power—whatever works for you) to provide the solutions you could never create on you own—and often couldn’t even imagine.

You shift your level of consciousness.

How much do you focus on what you don’t like about your body? What can you do to shift your attention to the body you do want and why you want it? What difference does that make in how you feel, and the energy you have to get the body you want?

Together we can do it!

Catch the Wave of Change

I’m heading to Sedona, Arizona, to attend a business mastermind retreat and am sharing one of my favorite blogs from the past. I’m also sending much love and positive energy to my clients, readers, collegues, and friends who have been dealing with the sudden changes brought by Hurricane Sandy. Be patient with yourselves as you deal with the intensity of this upheaval.

While it can seem like we are basically living the same day over and over again, that’s actually a fallacy. You may be following the same routine, but all around you is change.

The clouds in the sky will never be exactly the same pattern again. The birds and animals will never be in the exact same place. The cars and people moving around in their day are in totally new perspectives and positions from one another. The people we see and talk too are different, and even the words that we say to the people who are most consistent in our lives will be different.

This is truly a new day.

There is a basic life principle that says, “The Only Constant is Change.” We live totally immersed in change because it’s the normal process of life.

The problem comes when we refuse to accept change as a natural process, and instead try to control it.

You know you are trying to control change if it feels like you are being hit by a tidal wave. You may feel overwhelmed, worried, or fearful. You may feel like a victim of circumstances.

Embracing change feels like the exhilaration of riding that wave. Of being on top of it and moving and shifting with it until it runs its course. It is feeling empowered to make your own choices, and to know you have a choice even in the most difficult situations.

Being faced with two options you don’t like still gives you the power to choose.

If you have already been slammed by the wave of change and are doing your best just to stay afloat, how likely is it that you are going to be able to shift immediately to riding it?

It’s better to grab hold of your board, catch your breath, and use the lessons that you learned about what you don’t want to help you figure out what you do want

You want to be better prepared to catch the next wave!

While it may seem simple, a powerful way to help move you from underneath the wave to successfully riding it is to change your thoughts and language.

Changing the words you use—and the thoughts behind them—can truly change your reality. Suddenly you can see that a new wave is coming in, instead of being so focused on surviving that you totally miss the signs.

Simple changes like shifting:

“Have to,” to “Want to”

“Need to,” to “It’s Important to Me”

“Can’t” to “I choose not to”

These changes can profoundly impact how you adjust to change because you are shifting your focus from what you don’t want to what you do want.

Focusing on what you do want generates positive anabolic energy and keeps you centered and powerful. It builds you up and helps you believe in yourself.

Focusing on what you don’t want generates negative catabolic energy that is disempowering and tears you down. It keeps you stuck under those pounding waves.

What can you do to begin changing your language? How can you remind yourself to focus on what you do want versus what you have to do? Pay attention to how you feel as a result.

Begin doing that consistently and you’ll be riding those waves of change before you know it.

Together we can do it!

Focus on the Body You Want

I recently watched a woman grab her stomach and say, “This is why I want to lose weight.”

Of course that’s an obvious reason. And it’s extremely helpful to get clear on what you don’t want so you can figure out what you do want.

But what trips so many women up is they stay focused on what they don’t want.

This is a key reason so many women struggle to lose weight—and to keep it off.

Here’s why.

You’re fighting the laws of the Universe.

This makes sense when you think about the Foundation Principle that “Energy Attracts Like Energy,” also known as the Law of Attraction.

When you are focused on the fat, angry about the fat, desperate to get rid of the fat—you are stuck in the energy of fat. Ultimately you are attracting more opportunities to be focused on, angry about, and desperate to get rid of fat.

At its simplest, you get what you focus on—whether you want it or not.

Because you carry your body with you wherever you go, it can make it extremely difficult to shift your thoughts about your body from what is to what you want.

  • You are faced with “what is” every time you dress.
  • You are faced with “what is” every time you look in the mirror.
  • You are faced with “what is” every time you see someone who has what you don’t.

Is it any wonder so many women struggle with their weight?

How do you begin focusing more on what you want rather than what you don’t? More on what you like rather than what you hate? More on what you judge to be good rather than bad?

While it may seem counter-intuitive, accepting where you are is one of the fastest ways to accomplish your goals.

It may feel like letting go of the struggle and the discomfort of where you are will leave you content with a situation or condition you really want to change.

This is especially true with losing weight. There can be a lot of fear around accepting your current body weight, shape, and condition.

Calories count, right, so won’t you just go and eat everything in sight if you accept where you are?

Without that desperate desire to change, where’s the motivation to get up in the morning to work out?

Doesn’t losing weight require constant control and discipline, and you’re a slacker if you slip up?

But if you want the Law of Attraction to work for you, ease up on the negative catabolic energy that is truly holding you in your current condition.

Letting go of the fight, self-criticism, and the desire to have the end result right now acts like a release valve for all that pent-up catabolic energy.

It enables you to shift the momentum you have generated that is moving you towards what you don’t want, so that you can begin to move towards the body you do want.

When you ease up on yourself and put down the verbal lash, you can begin:

  • Focusing on the reasons you want to make a change
  • Envisioning the body that you do want
  • Celebrating each tiny step that you make towards achieving your goals

The more you surrender and focus on your success, the more you build positive momentum that will be like a tidal wave moving you towards your goal. With that momentum, the actions you take become easier and have more impact.

And you feel excited and inspired, which are your indications that you are working with the laws of the Universe rather than against them.

What can you do today to accept that you are where you are? When you feel a sense of relief, you will know you will have successfully hit the energetic release valve and will more easily move towards your goals.

Together we can do it!

Does This Blog Make Me Look Thin?

David and I are headed out this morning to go zip-lining, so I’m sharing one of my favorite past blogs.

Have you ever lost weight, but after you met your goal you still felt fat?

How quickly did you gain back the weight?

Feeling slim is critical to being slim long-term.

Your thoughts and feelings are much more powerful than most people understand.

When you take into account the Foundation Principle that “Energy Attracts Like Energy,” also known as the Law of Attraction, you begin to understand that how you see yourself and where you put your focus can make a difference in how well you maintain your weight loss.

To truly be a fit, strong, and slim person, it’s important to see yourself as a fit, strong, and slim person.

One of the reasons is that when you feel slim you begin to take on the behavioral characteristics of someone who is slim.

For instance, how much easier is it to resist those chocolate chip cookies if you are feeling confident and excited about being fit, strong, and slim versus seeing yourself as fat with no hope of ever having a beautiful body?

Most people see themselves through filters of self-criticism, limiting beliefs, assumptions about past experiences repeating themselves, and self-created interpretations about their lives.

Diet and exercise alone doesn’t alter those self-perceptions. Those changes have to come from the inside out.

Removing those negative, catabolic filters and shifting your self-perception so you can truly see yourself living the life you want takes time, energy, and practice, just as creating a healthy lifestyle takes time, energy, and practice.

When you practice both the internal and external changes you begin consciously creating the body–and life–you want.

Here are some simple tips to practice feeling slim.

  • Focus more on the parts of your body you can appreciate. If you are being critical of your stomach, shift your attention to your shapely calves instead.
  • Count and celebrate all the actions you are taking towards meeting your goals—and let go of the rest.
  • Act “as if” you are fit, strong, and slim now. The more you practice the more natural it becomes.

Practicing feeling slim along with healthy eating and moving your body helps you lose weight–and keep it off.

Together we can do it!

How to See Yourself as Sexworthy

A woman I work with was going to have her kids out of the house for the weekend and was planning to surprise romance her husband. But while she was getting dressed, she began criticizing her body.

She imagined her husband being as disgusted by her body as she was, and she felt unsexworthy.

The negative self-judgment was so painful that she wound up spending the evening crying alone in her bedroom.

I know that she is not the only one.

Many women who struggle with their weight avoid or turn down sex with their partners, or hide their bodies in the dark and under the covers.

They suffer from body shame.

Often, what is happening is you are so afraid of being judged and criticized by others that you heap on the self-abuse to the point that you shut down and shut off everything but the pain.

From this place of fear and despair it’s impossible to believe that anyone would find you attractive—or that you are worthy of another’s appreciation and love.

But the painful truth is that no one else was in that room with my client. No one else was heaping on criticism or telling her she was unattractive.

She was doing it to herself.

She never even gave her husband the chance to see her, comfort her, reassure her, and demonstrate to her how sexy he thinks she is and how much he loves her.

She took that opportunity away from him.

And the negative thoughts she attributed to him—without his input or knowledge—are now a belief about him that she is carrying around that will impact their relationship in subtle ways.

You have to feel lovable to be fully present and loving in a relationship.

Often, the fear of judgment is way, way worse than any criticism you may receive.

It’s time to break through this block of fear that is literally weighing you down.

One of the best ways to begin is to keep a judgment journal.

This exercise from Energy Leadership by Bruce Schneider calls for carrying around a small notebook or using the notes feature in your phone and jotting down every judgment you are aware of—about yourself or others.

You will quickly see just how often you are in judgment, and you can then ease up on your criticisms.

This self-awareness is extremely important when you consider the Foundation Principle that “Energy Attracts Like Energy,” also known as the Law of Attraction.

At its simplest, what this means is that when you are judging, you are attracting more opportunities to judge—and be judged. When you are loving, you are attracting more opportunities to love—and be loved.

What you think about yourself—and others—matters.

Begin to ease up on your self-criticism and examine your own judgments. When you see yourself—and others—as beautiful you change your perception of your body, relationships—and life.

You see yourself as sexworthy.

Together we can do it!

Are You Feeling the Love?

Someone asked me this week what I thought the key was to losing weight.

My answer was, “Self-love.”

Sure, through sheer willpower you can go on a diet and do an exercise program, and you will lose weight. But chances are if you don’t change the underlying thoughts, feelings, and beliefs you have about yourself, what you deserve, and your true value, as soon as you meet your goal, the weight will start packing back on.

Self-love impacts us at many, many levels.

Not only does it generate positive anabolic energy that rebuilds your body starting at the cellular level, but it actually inspires loving action—towards yourself and others. This includes naturally picking foods that resonate with your body, wanting to move, and consciously choosing to be happy.

And when you take into consideration the Foundation Principle that “Energy Attracts Like Energy,” also known as the Law of Attraction, these positive thoughts, feelings, and actions actually build on themselves and generate momentum that helps you get the body that you want.

There are a lot of misconceptions about self-love. Self-love is not about conceit or thinking you are “higher and mightier” than anyone else.

In fact, when you are coming from a true place of self-love, it spills over onto everyone—and everything—else. When you recognize and acknowledge your own intrinsic value, you automatically see it in others. When you feel an abundance of love there is no need to put conditions on, or limit the love that you give in any way.

While loving yourself sounds easy, if you have been practicing self-loathing for a while, it takes practice to shift your thoughts, feelings, and beliefs to self-acceptance, self-appreciation, and ultimately self-love.

Don’t believe me? Go stand in front of a mirror, look deeply into your eyes, and say with all your heart, “I love you.”

If saying that feels like a big fat lie that is a huge indication of why you struggle with your weight (please refer back to Energy Attracts Like Energy).

The good news is that self-love is the Source of who you are, and it is a powerful beacon calling you towards it. All you have to do is ease up on the thoughts of self-criticism and you will begin to naturally turn towards it.

It is only hard to do that because you have a well-established negative thought pattern going on that has some momentum behind it (please refer back to Energy Attracts Like Energy).

You just have to ease up on yourself, and ease up, and ease up. It’s like tapping the brakes of your car to slow yourself when you are going at a high rate of speed. If you try to slam on the breaks, you are likely to be in an accident. Instead, you just gently and gradually slow the momentum and soon you are able to get off at the next exit and get going in the direction you want to go.

How you do you begin to slow your momentum and turn towards self-love?

What is one thing you can appreciate about yourself right now? Really get behind that thought and feel the appreciation. Do that again tomorrow. And then think about two things about yourself you can appreciate. Do that every day and add to the list.

The more you do that, the more you will naturally move towards that ever-present beacon of love that is pulsing from your True Self.

Together we can do it!

What Did You Expect?

Whatever you’re thinking about is literally like planning a future event. When you’re worrying, you are planning. When you’re appreciating you are planning…What are you planning?

Abraham as interpreted by Esther Hicks

“Miracles are happening, seen and unseen.”

This is the mantra that has been going through my head all weekend. And I absolutely believe it to the tips of my toes.

Every time I was critical of my body or discouraged that my physical progress in my 18-week Transformation Challenge isn’t further along, I said it.

Every time I thought about the future and doubted, I said it.

Every time I caught myself concerned or worried, I said it.

Because this is my life I’m creating. If I want things to be different, then my thoughts, feelings, and beliefs have to be different first.

When you think about the Foundation Principle that “Like Energy Attracts Like Energy,” also known as the Law of Attraction, it makes sense that if you’re doubting, worrying, or being critical of yourself or others you’re attracting more of that same energy back to you. In other words, you’re creating more things about which to doubt, worry, or be critical.

A quick way to check what you’re thinking, and therefore creating, is to examine what you expect. Do you expect things to work out—or not? Do you expect life to go your way—or not? Do you expect things to be easy—or not? You’re getting more of what you expect.

All-That-Is (God, the Universe, Source Energy, Higher Coach—whatever works for you) absolutely wants you to have every good thing you desire, but you have to open the vibrational-door wide enough to receive it.

You’re opening that door when you’re experiencing positive anabolic emotions, such as hope, contentment, eagerness, excitement, joy, and love.

Even more powerful than shifting those negative catabolic thoughts and emotions is to build on the anabolic, because that’s what you truly want more of.

So every time this weekend that I caught myself feeling confident, I reminded myself that “Miracles are happening, seen and unseen.”

Every time I was appreciating something, I said it.

Every time I was laughing, I said it.

Every time I felt loved or loving, I said it.

Perhaps you don’t believe in miracles. Do you believe in answers and solutions? Then replace miracles with a word that does bring a feeling of relief, because that’s all that’s needed to shift to a more anabolic state. Every time you make even a tiny shift towards being more anabolic, you open the door a little wider for the Universe to give you the answers, solutions—and even miracles—that you’re asking for.

What can you do to remind yourself that answers, solutions, and miracles are coming? More importantly, what can you do to believe it?

Together we can do it!
