Slow and Steady Wins the Weight-Loss Race—For Good!

RHow are those New Year’s Resolutions to lose weight coming? Are you still plugging away? Can you feel them starting to waiver? Or have they been put aside to show up on next year’s list?

One of the things that can cause people to pass on meeting their wellness goals is the overwhelming feeling that can come from trying to go from holiday-treat-eating coach-potato to food-measuring athlete all at once.

There really is no rule that says you have to change all of your behaviors at once to succeed.

I didn’t.

Four years ago, for various reasons I went from a runner to a walker to not doing any exercise at all. During that period of inactivity, I didn’t curb my eating and pretty quickly reached my heaviest weightever.

I found myself starting over with exercise and losing weight—again. And it did NOT feel good.

While I hated where I was, I just couldn’t seem to find the energy to get out of bed and move.

So what changed? How did I get going?

I first started mentally preparing.

These mental preparations did include mentally visualizing me moving my body, but most importantly, they were a conscious effort to change my thoughts, feelings, and beliefs.

You see, I was spending a whole lot of my mental energy feeling like a failure.

Here I was in this place of starting over—again! I knew how to diet and exercise, yet, I had failed. Surly this meant I was a weak person, or a slacker, or was somehow inherently flawed.

Those beliefs were not getting me anywhere. In fact, they were keeping me stuck in the spiral of shame and self-loathing that I thought losing weight would fix. But that very shame and self-loathing made it nearly impossible to force-start a new diet and exercise program.

And I was struggling with thoughts and beliefs about how hard working out was going to be, and how much hunger and deprivation I was going to have to endure. I was dreading it. These kinds of thoughts were NOT conducive to starting a successful diet and exercise program.

It was important to take the time to mentally prepare for where I wanted to go.

Action is great, but if you don’t have your thoughts, feelings, and beliefs aligned behind it, it’s not going to create sustainable results.

Part of that mental preparation was gently letting go of the idea that I was somehow a failure. Was I really? I did know what to do. In fact, I was so mentally disciplined that numerous times I had forcedmyself to push past a wall of negative energy to Make Things Happen.

What mattered was my belief in myself. What mattered was that I knew Who I was and what I could accomplish.

Changing those underlying thoughts brought a sense of relief that was enough to begin to shift the momentum of energy in my favor.

Another part of my mental preparation was to think about all the reasons I did want to be slim, fit, and healthy. To imagine how good that would feel.

I took my reasons a lot deeper than just looking good in a pair of jeans. I wanted to fully live a vibrantand fulfilling life. A part of me felt like I wasn’t living up to my full potential. I wasn’t consistently showing up in relationships as the person I wanted to be.  I wasn’t accomplishing everything I wanted to accomplish. I wasn’t showing up in my life as who I knew I intended.

Having physical health, energy, and stamina was critical to be able to step out as the Me I truly wanted to be.

And the final piece of mental preparation?

I reached out for support. Having someone there to confirm that I wasn’t a failure or a slacker, and to tell me that they “knew I could do it” was what tipped the energetic scale enough that I was able to get out of bed on that chilly morning and move!

But that movement would have been a joke to some people. What I considered a huge success was just 10 minutes of any kind of physical movement. Seriously, I counted everything! Counting and celebrating each tiny sign of success continued to build the energetic momentum towards achieving my goals.

And it wasn’t until I was consistently meeting my physical goals that I started thinking about the slow and steady changes I could make with my eating.

The daily mental preparation continued to be critical to my achieving my success. It was the wind that helped me get airborne and support me as I flew.

It was—and continues to be—the critical factor in how I have easily maintained a size 6 now for the past several years.

Yes, it took me a year to lose 34 pounds and get back into great shape. So what?

At the end of that year I was a lot happier having slowly and steadily made those small decisions towards a healthier lifestyle than to try to do too much at once and give up, only to be faced with the same goal and results a year later.

And now several years later, I can tell you taking it slow and steady was totally worth it!

It was that slow and steady, inside out approach that led to sustainable results.

What small mental shift can you make today that will move you towards a healthier lifestyle? Do that for a week and then look for another tiny step to make. Do that consistently and you will build momentum and achieve your goals.

Do that consistently and next January 1 you will be celebrating your success rather than being faced with the disheartening decision to put Losing Weight on your list of New Year’s Resolutions—again.

Signs of Progress

One year ago today, I published my first blog on this site.

That was me lining up my thoughts and beliefs with my actions and desires, and saying a big “Yes!” to the future I envisioned.

Since then, I have not only published a wellness tip and a blog six days a week, but I have interacted with you fabulous readers, read some amazing writing on others’ blogs, been inspired and hopefully given inspiration—maybe even to you.

I also successfully dealt with my own wellness challenges—including a major surgery—improved my nutrition, and have maintained my weight and fitness level.

In addition, I completed my coaching certifications and my business has taken off—I’ve even hired a business coach to help me with it. I’m super excited about the changes I have coming as a result, including a new website, coaching programs, e-book, beach-side Love Your Way Slim retreat, and much, much more!

More importantly, I love my life—and the people in it—more than I ever dreamed possible!

My intention with this blog has been—and will remain—to inspire and provide value to you fabulous readers. Each blog is an expression of how much I appreciate your time, your energy, where you are in life and on your wellness journey, our connection, and Who you are as a person.

Thank you for all the follows, likes, awards, support, and comments. They have all been felt and appreciated. And the greatest honor of all has been your letting me know when a blog has moved or inspired you.

And I especially want to thank all you readers who have been with me from those early days. Knowing you were reading and cheering me on made all the difference in the world. Much love and appreciation to each of you.

Here’s to the changes and growth we will all experience together in the coming year. I look forward to connecting more deeply with you as we share our personal wellness journeys.

Together we can do it!

PS Just for fun, here is my first post. I’ve come a long way, baby!

Celebrate the Signs!

Posted on September 3, 2011

Wellness Tip of the Weekend: Have faith in your ability to make the decisions that will create optimal health—and then follow through with them.

Every moment of every day we are creating our life. Each decision will either hold us in place or move us towards the person we want to become. If you want to be fit, strong, and lean, then consistently make the decisions that someone who is fit, strong, and lean would make.

Each successful decision, each pound lost–each tiny sign of progress–is like the scenery passing by on a car trip. It is the landmark on the map showing you that you are moving towards the person you want to be. Celebrate those signs, no matter how small! It means you are succeeding!

Together we can do it!

I’m Healthy and I Know It!

Last night after brushing our very furry Keeshond dogs, I picked up the grooming table to put it away and dropped it on the ball-joint of my foot. To say it hurt is an understatement. It hurt so much, in fact, that I thought I had broken it.

After hearing the crash and racing up the stairs, my fabulous husband found me writhing on the floor with my foot already turning dark shades.

Remembering the RICE rule (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation), David immediately got me up on the sofa to ice and elevate my foot. Once the initial wave of pain eased, I hobbled into the bedroom where I remained for the rest of the night.

For about the first 20 minutes, I lay there trying to think about how I could alter my exercise routine to work around my injury. As I pushed myself up to a sitting position to take some Advil, I realized I’d also hurt my hand.

As if reading my mind, David said, “I think it’s safe to say this is going to impact your workout routine.”

In the past, this is where I would have started freaking out. Visions of backsliding and weight gain would have filled my mind. I would have been totally focused on the worst-case scenario.

Ahh, I love how much I have changed.

Instead, I made peace with it, started looking for the opportunities, and invited in wellness.

My thoughts went something like this:

This is temporary. I will heal and recover and I will be working out to full capacity again in no time. And there will be a lot of opportunities to get creative with how I move my body. Just because I’m injured doesn’t mean I can’t do anything. And just think about how much I will appreciate my feet during this time.

And I know the amazing power of All-That-Is (God, the Universe, Source Energy, Higher Coach—whatever works for you.) The moment that I hurt my foot I was asking vibrationally for healing and a return to wellness, and I know that when we ask, it is given.

My wellness will return as rapidly as I am open to receiving it.

I then took 30 minutes to meditate and used any time I was awake during the night to relax into my wellness.

After awaking at my normal time, I asked my body if it would prefer me to get up and try to do some kind of workout, or if I should sleep. An immediate jab of pain in my foot seemed to answer that rest is what I needed, so I turned over.

When I did get up, I was amazed to find that the bruising and swelling was almost completely gone and while still tender and sore, I can walk fairly easily. While flip-flops will be my footwear of choice for a few days and I will want to continue to rest, ice, and elevate, my hand and foot are going to be back to normal in no time.

Even better is that I feel great this morning and am ready to embrace my day. With different thoughts, I would have woken exhausted and pessimistic.

How we respond truly makes a huge difference in how we experience life. What can you do to change your thoughts about a “negative” situation? How does that change your experience of it? What might be the value in continually reaching for a more “positive” perspective?

Together we can do it!

Sharing A Prosperity Blessing

One of the first things I do every morning is read inspirational emails from a number of my favorite teachers. Today, before I headed upstairs for my workout, I read Veronica Hay’s Prosperity Blessing, which was shared by Bob Proctor in his Insight of the Day.

Abundance and prosperity–which are indeed a part of optimal wellness–have been on my mind a lot lately, and this blessing captured how I woke up feeling. Since these are the wishes I have for you, I am sharing her wonderful words.

May you be blessed with an amazingly abundant day today!

May the clouds break and the heavens pour down upon you more joy, more love, more laughter and more money than you could have ever dreamed of.

May the sun shine its golden light of prosperity through every cell of your extraordinary body.

May you be cleansed today of any resistance or feelings of unworthiness that you may still be holding onto.

May your false illusions of doubt, fear and scarcity gently fall away like soft white feathers on a gentle breeze.

May you be willing, simply willing, to allow the Universe to shower you with miracles today.

May the Angels wrap you in their shining wings of opulence.

May the fairies deliver you to their pot of gold at the end of a majestic rainbow.

May your eyes shine with the glorious truth of who you really are and may that truth uplift others in your presence to their own inner knowing.

May your ears hear the sound of perfection ringing in your soul.

May you taste the deliciousness of every precious bite of life as your day unfolds moment by moment with amazing grace, heartfelt love and a bounty of magnificent money.

As this day ends, may you slumber wrapped in an exquisite blanket of enduring peace and profound gratitude.

And may the last words you speak today be Thank You!

Do You Know Who You Are?

What if Who you are at your best is Who you truly are? That your very core is the person who responds with a kind word, helps others, and engages with and loves life?

What if all you had to do to be the best possible version of you was to accept that higher vision as Truth, and let go of some long-practiced inaccurate thoughts, feelings, and beliefs about Who you are, what you deserve, and how great your life can be?

Would being that bigger, brighter, happier version of you be worth the time and effort to let go of everything but the belief that you can be that person?

If you at least hope that these words are true, then you can become the best possible version of you.

If you don’t believe they are true, then that is all that is holding you back from doing the same thing.

During coach training this weekend, I got some clarity on all those things that I think and tell myself that hold me back from being the best possible version of me.

It all boiled down to old messages that I picked up along the road of life that are not true.

Thoughts like:

  • “Don’t try because it will only lead to failure and rejection.”
  • “No one listens or cares about me.”
  • “I’m not capable.”
  • “I should have known and done better.”
  • “I am stupid, forgetful, thoughtless, lazy, etc.”
  • “Life is hard.”
  • “I have to do everything myself.”
  • “I must protect myself.”
  • “I must control all aspects of my life.”
  • “Eating helps me relax.”
  • “I don’t want to be told what to do.”

There are of course lots more, but I expect you get the point and might even recognize some of these as thoughts and beliefs that you’ve had.

Your negative, catabolic self-perception and world-view is all that is holding you back. Whoever told you those things was wrong. Those conclusions you drew were inaccurate.

The Truth is the only way to succeed is to have fun trying, and to learn from each experience until you get the result you want. You are fully seen and loved beyond measure. You are more capable than you can imagine. The process of learning how to do better is incredibly valuable. You are worthy and brilliant. All-That-Is (God, the Universe, Source Energy, Higher Coach—whatever works for you) is working on your behalf, if you will let It. There is no one right way to do anything and the way others do it is valuable. You are perfectly safe. Your life is unfolding just as it should. All of your emotions are valuable and are worth feeling fully. Finding the solution that works best for everyone is the best way to work with others.

Create a vision of Who you are when you are at your best. What are the thoughts, feelings, and beliefs that are holding you back? What can you do today to be the person you truly are?

Together we can do it!

How Do You Envision Your Life?

I have spent the morning envisioning my future, and it is good.

This is part of an assignment for a workshop I am taking with my mentor coach, the fabulous Jennifer Barley. While I’ve done visioning exercises in the past that have been powerful, this time it feels even more profound and freeing. But I expect even this vision will expand and evolve as I do, because life is a continuous growing process.

Visioning is simple in that you are envisioning the life that you want to live. The challenge is that often people are unknowingly focused on what they don’t want. Anything that has “not” or “don’t” in front of it is focused on what you don’t want. For instance, “I don’t want to be fat” is still focused on fat. “I don’t want to be in debt” is still focused on debt.

What you’re really saying is that you want to be fit, strong, and lean. You want to be financially free.

Visioning can be words or images (think vision board)—whatever evokes the feeling you want your life to generate. The more fully you can paint this picture in your mind by incorporating all the physical senses, the more powerful it is.

Ultimately you want your vision to give your life direction and to inspire action. And when you take into account the Foundation Principle that “Energy Attracts Like Energy,” also known as the Law of Attraction, it makes sense to as clearly as possible put your focus on what you want.

Interestingly, what I did with this vision is actually get away from specific directives, such as “I want this amount of money by this date.” Instead I described the essence of what I want, which makes my goal feel much more believable. For instance, many of the women I work with have a hard time looking at themselves in the mirror and saying, “I am beautiful.” It just feels like a lie. They can’t allow themselves to feel or believe it. That internal struggle really isn’t helpful when you are trying to envision the life that you want to live. So anytime I felt even the hint of resistance in myself, I tweaked the wording until I could fully embrace it.

I also did sort of a combination vision statement and vision board by incorporating images alongside my vision statements that help me tap into the emotion and detail I want. Because many of the images are things I don’t have the authority to share over the internet, I can’t show you the finished piece, which is now printed out on ledger paper and posted on the wall in front of my computer. I also incorporated color and formatting that I’m not including here.

My intention with sharing my vision statement is to help you think about yours. How do you want your body, mind, spiritual connection, relationships, work, and any other element of life to be in the future? How can you connect with your vision on a daily basis? What kind of impact does that have on your life?

Together we can do it!
